 Large animals in a zoo, a hard mortar floor would be dangerous of them at a living because the animals could suffer serious injuries if they dropped their knees on so hard it. This is because humans also suffer serious injuries from dropping their knees on hard mortar. So, it's probably the same for large animals. However, mortar is easy to clean. If it is dirt, you would have to carry it with a shovel. But you will be hard work of you.

It might be more appropriate for you to seek advice from an Indian person, because  they have live together of elephants. You might want to apply their advice to building a suitable environment for other large animals as an example of like hippos. Perhaps the answer is a wooden board.

Large animals in the wild live in environments where the ground is soil. Even if they fall, they don't suffer serious injuries. Perhaps that's reason of why these animals are so large.

For now, laying straw on the floor might be a good idea.
